The shootings in Colorado were horrific. Can you imagine someone stepping out on stage during your movie or just before it starts and opening fire on you? Unbelievable, right? But there are some that didn’t hesitate to spring into action once the gunman started shooting.
Jarrell Brooks, 19, was sitting about six rows from the back exit when the gunman appeared onstage and began shooting into the crowd, he told reporters at ABC. He and Patricia Legarreta were in the same aisle and when he saw that she needed help with her two daughters, one an infant, he immediately gave assistance to them:
“At the end of the aisle, I ran into a woman. She yelled, ‘My kids!’ and I saw she had two young kids with her,” he told ABC News. “I made sure they got in the aisle and pushed behind her to make sure she got out of there.”
But as he struggled to help the family to the door, Brooks was shot in the thigh and Legarreta was shot as well. They both fell, but managed to get out without any further injuries.
Legarreta told ABC:
“It makes me feel glad because I felt helpless,” she said. “Everybody at that moment was going through it, and to know that someone had that mindset, it makes me feel happy to know that in times of trial, there are good people out there.”
