There are numerous skeptics that believe Earvin “Magic” Johnson was never infected with the HIV virus. But, it is probably more accurate that, with his level of wealth, he could afford to keep himself symptom-free with the newest medications. But now there may be a new drug on the horizon that will prevent people from contracting the virus and a personal test for detection of the virus.
That’s right! The first over-the-counter HIV test that can be taken in the privacy of your own home hit the market less than two weeks ago after being approved by the Food and Drug Administration. And then again on Monday, the FDA hit again with another groundbreaking approval of Gilead Sciences’ new pill, Truvada. The drug prevents those without HIV from contracting the virus, according to News One.com
Those that are in a relationship with someone that already has the virus are at a higher risk for contracting the virus and this drug is ideally for them. The report didn’t stipulate the cost of the HIV at-home test, but there was info on the cost of Truvada:
“Gilead Sciences said Monday that it would keep the pill at its current price, nearly $14,000 per year. Even at that price, HIV physicians said the drug could be cost effective if it prevents people from contracting the virus.”
Overall, this is great news that could possibly be the greatest achievement in preventing the spread of the virus. Read more here.
