Comic books have long reflected the issues in society to make the content more true to life. And the latest issue of one beloved comic book is no different as it will include the topic of same-sex marriage.
In 1992, the Astonishing X-Men made a huge splash in the headlines with the debut of its first openly gay superhero Northstar. In the issue hitting stands June 20, Northstar and his partner Kyle get engaged and married, according to Rolling Stone.
Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso told Rolling Stone that this is merely the comic book reflecting the current issue of today:
“Our comics are always best when they respond to and reflect developments in the real world. We’ve been doing that for decades, and this is just the latest expression of that.”
It makes perfect sense, right? For 20 years now, the comic book has had this gay superhero character in a relationship with this human partner. Isn’t it about time they got hitched?
