One of the most devastating car accidents that has ever happened occurred Sunday. The car crash is the second to happen in nearly this very same location. Another crash happened in 2006, along this stretch of highway.
One family has been destroyed over the loss of seven family members that died in a horrific accident where the family van bounced off the median and careened off a three-lane highway into and through a barrier, falling 60 feet into an uninhabited area of the Bronx Zoo.
The family members in the van include grandparents Jacob Nunez, 85, and Ana Julia Martinez, 81, both from the Dominican Republic, their daughters, Maria Gonzalez, 45, and Maria Nunez, 39, and three grandchildren Jocelyn Gonzalez, 10, the daughter of the driver, Niely Rosario, 7, and Marly Rosario, 3, both daughters of Nunez.
Authorities are still baffled by what caused the accident, but some believe that the van may have had a blowout that sent the van across three lanes of traffic and over the freeway barrier of the Bronx River Parkway.
The sorrow is unimaginable as Juan Gonzalez, the husband of Maria Gonzalez, mourns his family telling New York Daily News:
“I don’t want to live anymore. I’m destroyed.”
The entire family just celebrated Jocelyn Gonzalez’s first communion at St. Lucy’s Catholic church on Saturday. Her grandparents had just flown in from the Dominican Republic Thursday and would be staying with the family for two months.
God bless them all. Rest in peace.
