Fifth Grade Debate Team Impresses Audience

Fifth graders from Roanoke, Virginia visit the distinguished Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, known for tis excellence in debate, with their teacher Jeff May.

All debate teams would love to enjoy the legacy of the debate teams of  Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, that were under the instruction of Melvin B. Tolson as seen in the movie The Great Debaters.  One debate team is well on their way to that excellence and even took a trip to the esteemed campus for pointers.

A team of fifth graders  from Roanoke, Virginia, under the instruction of their teacher Jeff May, took a tour of the college that is home to a debate team that was undefeated for 20 years straight.  The impressive 11-year old debaters were there to get  a historical lesson that would help push their team even further.

Savan Carter is a member of the team and is already certain of his future.  He’d like to earn a doctorate in motivational speaking:

“Bringing the passion, tearing the roof down, bringing it home. My ability to speak, to articulate better because that can help you in anything: motivational speaking, English, writing…”
