The lottery is a funny thing. Doesn’t it seem that the more it’s played, the less people win? Well, at least, no one is making back their money Is that why people get involved in these office pools? They think that the odds are better when they get others involved? But one New Jersey man is kickin’ himself for being the lottery ticket buyer for his group. His ticket was mixed right in with the pool…but he didn’t know that.
In 2009, Americo Lopes, 52, went out to get the tickets for his group as usual, but then he claims that he bought one of his very own, according to MSNBC. He said he bought 12 tickets for the group and one for himself. Of course, the one he bought for himself was the winning ticket on a $77 million jackpot that was also hit by one other person.
But the dudes from the construction site where he worked cried foul and took him to court. The jury ruled on Tuesday that he has to give his co-workers $20 million of the $24 million he took home after taxes.
Three years later, what’s the odds of Lopes having $20 million to give up? That’s going to be the next court case we hear about. Run Lopes, Run! Read more here.
