In the African American community, there has been some issues with patriotism to a country that has left them disenfranchised throughout history. In various wars throughout history, the military relegated black men to menial labor and wouldn’t allow them to fight for their own country. But, one man has traced his family tree to an ancestor that fought in a war pre-dating the Civil War.
Chaz Moore, 30, found that he is a descendant of Toby Gilmore, who is the son of a chieftain in West Africa. At 16, Gilmore was sold into slavery in Massachusetts, but he was able to fight in the American Revolution to gain his freedom. So with this new information it is only right that Moore be able to join the Sons of the American Revolution in North Carolina.
Moore is a firefighter and he will become the first black member to join the group. During Black History Month, he was inducted in a ceremony at the state Museum of History. Read more on this interesting story of patriotism here.
