There is so much drama in high school between kids. Whose clothes are the best? Who has the latest this or that? Did she say that about me? And oh yeah, Is that black guy messin’ with his white cousin? And then it’s on.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Joshua Merritt, 16, thought his day was going like any other when one of his classmates invited him over his house after school. The visit was even normal…at first. Two extra boys came in and they started calling him the n-word and other racially laced crap. But, that was just the beginning.
He began to fear for his life and asked them to stop as one held a knife to his throat and threatened to kill him and another slipped a noose over his head. He was able to get out of the noose, but they did it again. They blocked his exit, but somehow he was able to get out of the house.
Merritt explained that he wasn’t dating the boy’s cousin. They are just friends. But, the incident led to the arrests of three of the boys for hate crimes. The 16-year old whose house Merritt was held in was charged with charged as a juvenile “with committing a hate crime, unlawful restraint, aggravated battery and aggravated assault for allegedly pulling a knife.” A 17-year old was also charged as a juvenile. Matthew Hermann, 18, was charged as an adult.
