The crimes committed against women are sometimes hard to argue in a court of law when it comes to cases like domestic abuse and rape. But it appears that a woman in California had neither of those claims to her benefit when she murdered her husband.
Tomiekia Johnson, 31, is a former California Highway Patrol officer who got into a dispute with her husband, Marcus Lemons, on the drive home from a local Friday’s, according to the Los Angeles Times. They had been drinking and an argument escalated in the car while she was driving. He choked her and snatched the keys out of the ignition once she pulled off of freeway 91.
Johnson had a gun in her purse and she felt he was wrestling the purse from her to get to it. Somehow the gun made it out of the purse and during the struggle she shot and killed him on February 21, 2009. During the case Johnson said:
“I was not trying to kill Marcus. I would never try to hurt him,” she said, weeping. “He always hit me.”
But witnesses testified that Johnson had an “aggressive personality and a tendency to drink excessively.” The end result was a guilty charge levied against Johnson along with a possible 50-year sentence. She immediately collapsed on to the floor and was rushed to the hospital. No one knows the truth, but Johnson and her now deceased husband. Read more here.
