Vancouver ‘Cracks’ Down on Diseases with Free Shatterproof Pipes

Canada is having a problem with their drug community and they are trying to find a way to crack down on the use of drugs which have been spreading disease.  Now how they came up with handing out free crack pipes to remedy the situation is a little more imaginative or thinking outside the box than we would’ve ever guessed.

According to the UK’s Daily Mail, Vancouver Eastside is a crime-riddled community that is predominantly black and is also the only black community in the city.  It’s an area of Vancouver that is known for prostitution, drugs, and homelessness that the city is trying out a “harm reduction strategy” to lower the amount of communicable diseases that are prevalent amongst crack users.

The project costs $60,000 and the shatterproof, heat resistant top of the line crack pipes are only one piece of the drug paraphernalia that the city started distributing in December via a “crack packet.”  In the pack is “mouthpieces, filters, alcohol swabs, screens and push sticks.”

The controversial program will not likely make it across the water into America, but in the meantime, crack users in Vancouver are happy with the arrangement.  Read more here.
