Microsoft Granted ‘Avoid Ghetto’ Patent for GPS

Microsoft is going to have to pull off some serious damage control to avoid the backlash from developing an “Avoid Ghetto” patent for the GPS.  What argument could Microsoft possibly use to rationalize the meaning beyond calling such an ap “Avoid Ghetto”.  The name is more than irresponsible.  Bill Gates, we are so disappointed!

According to CBS News, Gates’ company didn’t mean it that way.  They built the GPS ap to keep pedestrians from straying into the wrong area or THE GHETTO as the patent claim states.  The report says that Microsoft explained the patent for the Windows7 Smartphone as:

“As a pedestrian travels, various difficulties can be encountered, such as traveling through an unsafe neighborhood or being in an open area that is subject to harsh temperatures,” Microsoft stated in their patent claims. “A route can be developed for a person taking into account factors that specifically affect a pedestrian. Moreover, the route can alter as a situation of a user changes; for instance, if a user wants to add a stop along a route.”

Close but no cigar Microsoft! You still got some ‘splainin’ to do.  That statement doesn’t address the use of language for the patent and we have got to hold your feet to the fire for this one.  Whether you live in the “ghetto” or not, the objectivity of an area of people and the racist undertone it suggests, but maybe not intended, has to be clarified.  Microsoft is one of the biggest companies in the world.  Do they really not know that this isn’t right?  And where was Bill Gates when they cooked this one up in the lab?

  1. The app is not called “Avoid Ghetto” at all. Get your story straight before fueling the fires of fake racism.

  2. So what exactly is wrong with stating a situation just the way it is? Will the political correctness ever end?

If I were using the device, I would be grateful if it helped me avoid accidently walking through an American ghetto.

  3. I’m sorry if you didn’t use the link to review the report from CBS, Jeff. But the network is a very reliable source for information. The “patent” name was not created by us to fan any racial flames. We are merely making our viewers aware of a story, not singularly run by CBS, but other credible news and information organizations as well. But in the story that we used, CBS SAID:

“It’s been coined the “avoid ghetto” GPS patent, but its purpose is a bit more complex.”

In the future, please use our links and other resources available to you before attacking us. Thanks for reading. Please continue to do so. We work hard to give you information you may find interesting and/or informative.

  4. I could care less who it ticks off – I’d LOVE to have an “avoid ghetto” feature on my GPS.

I live in Atlanta. You can go from million dollar homes, to intersections where you’ll be carjacked in less than 15 seconds, in less than a mile in some areas. Even people who have lived here for years have a hard time keeping up with where all of the “pockets of safety” are, surrounded by the “avoid at all cost” areas. A feature like this on a smart phone app GPS or car GPS until could quite LITERALLY, save your life – and sorry if that offends anyone.

  5. They need to include the areas where Blacks and other minorities are subject to racial profiling and hate crimes! Of course that would be the entire borders of the United States.(sic) I smell a lawsuit coming.

  6. i’ve lived in the “ghetto” for a while (not exactly, since it’s lakefront property next to a golf course and a former country club) and I’ve never had the misfortune of being a victim (though i’ve seen the aftermath in enough situations). however, when i look up the different crimes on the neighborhood maps, it seems like the cliche ghetto crimes stick to the ghetto (drugs, robberies, shootings) but all the creeper stuff happens more often outside of the “ghetto” neighborhoods (rapes, kidnappings, murders, alleged hate crimes). i don’t really think it’s going to make anyone any safer to have this app. it might be more comfortable if you want to avoid the “you don’t look like you’re from around here” stares and the potential pickpocketing incidents (which can happen anywhere), but in the end, it’s up to individuals to avoid traveling to unfamiliar places alone or at night, and to not be too flashy in a place where it’s going to stick out.

  7. I’m in favor of an App like this. Screw Political Correctness. This App can literally save lives.
Anyone that has strayed off into the wrong art of a town can tell you how scary it is. I had two students at The University of Philadelphia who walked into the wrong section of the city. They were punched, kicked and burned with cigarrettes. One suffered a severe concussion.
So you tell me how this App is not a GREAT idea! I don’t care who feels insulted by it. it is what it is!

  8. Well now we need an app called “avoid ghetto people”, that would be priceless. All jokes aside, what is really in a name? A ghetto is community of only one type of race, it doesn’t mean a black community it means a community lacking diversity. Besides look how crimes from car jackings and other things will drop with this app since drivers will be more aware of the areas that they are in.
