Just reading the headline of this story is confusing. How is it that an African American can be deported to Colombia? Wouldn’t one of the first major tell-tale signs be that the girl couldn’t speak Spanish? There was no hint of an accent…nothing! Why was there such a laxidasical approach to confirming the identity of this young woman?
According to the Grio, Jakadrien Turner, 14, ran away from home after problems resulting from her grandfather’s death and her parents divorce. She was picked up for theft, made up a name, and coincidentally, that name matched a Colombian person who had warrants for her arrest. Strange, right?
Now the Colombian government refuses to release the girl and the blame for the mix-up rests on the shoulders of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The only reason she has even been discovered in Colombia is through the investigative efforts of her grandmother. Lorene Turner went to Facebook and was able to obtain information that helped her locate her granddaughter that has been missing since 2010.
But now it’s also been discovered that Jakadrien is pregnant and still being held in a Colombian jail until the governments come to a concensus on her fate. This story sounds like something out of the Bourne Identity series. Crazy!
Check it out.
