It is no secret that a lot of African Americans voted for President Obama simply because he was African American. For some, that was all the credentials he needed to win them over. Well, the Fly Jock is revving up the campaign trail with that element as a key factor in voting for the President.
According to the Root, Tom Joyner took to his blog asking that all black listeners re-elect President Obama. On BlackAmericaWeb he wrote:
“Let’s not even deal with facts right now. Let’s deal with our blackness and pride — and loyalty. We have a chance to reelect the first African American president … And I’m not afraid or ashamed to say that as black people, we should do it because he’s a black man.”
What should this message mean to the black community? Should we be upset that he is being reduced to just his color? Does it belittle us to think that we can’t possibly know what we need from our President and what he should be doing for us?
In the report, one white columnist said that using this thinking at the voter’s booth is “a terrible idea.” And that anyone using the race card to pick their President would be “doing a disservice to themselves and to the nation.”
