Bryant Gumbel Calls Out NBA Commissioner as “Plantation Overseer”

Bryant Gumbel and NBA Commissioner David Stern

Everyone is getting antsy and frustrated with the delay of the 2011-2012 NBA season.  Maybe that’s why the media has started to chide the powers that be.  But, it’s one thing for the general public to weigh in with deriding remarks about the NBA, but when heavy hitting, high profile journalists start to go off, then Houston! We have a problem.

According to NBC, well-known journalist and host of the award-winning HBO “Real Sports” Bryant Gumbel, took it to the NBA’s commissioner, David Stern, about what he feels is the real reason behind the NBA’s prolonged lockout.  Essentially, he feels that Stern looks at the players as his “boys” and that he makes an effort to keep them in their place and letting them know who’s in charge.  Gumbel was quoted saying:

“But his efforts were typical of a commissioner, who has always seemed eager to be viewed as some kind of modern plantation overseer treating NBA men as if they were his boys,” Gumbel said. “It’s part of Stern’s M.O. Like his past self-serving edicts on dress code or the questioning of officials, his moves are intended to do little more than show how he’s the one keeping the hired hands in their place.”

There are several other instances where Gumbel has exposed racial issues in various sports.  Read the full story here.
