Extreme Sports enthusiasts should be rethinking their strategies as they watch one of their own take a “hit” to his sporting career. The next time someone wants to take a bike ride through areas of the world that are habitats for wild animals, they will either rethink that decision or not do it at all. I’m leaning toward “don’t do it!”
Every major network was abuzz with a viral video of South African mountain biker Evan van der Spuy, 17, being taken down by a vicious hit from a huge antelope during a race in South Africa. According to the L.A. Times, he is a team member of Team Jeep South Africa and was riding through “South Africa’s golden bushland near Albert Falls Dam, north of Pietermaritzberg.”
Van der Spuy was literally knocked out. When he sat up from the collision, he didn’t remember what happened after calling out to his teammate to warn him about the buck he saw on his right. But, he should’ve been hitting the brakes instead of issuing a warning and continuing to pedal.
Check out the interview with the cyclist here and watch the video of the event below. Wow!
