Have you heard of George Wright? He was a convicted criminal, black political army member, murderer, robber, and hijacker. He was jailed in 1962 for murdering a World War II hero and broke out of prison in 1970 and has been on the run ever since. He had managed to pull off an unimaginable crime feat…until now.
Tuesday, Wright was brought to justice at the age of 68 to complete his sentence of 15 to 30 years and quite possibly another sentence for his part in the hijacking of a Delta Airlines plane to Miami in 1972. In 1970, he went to Detroit when he broke out of a New Jersey prison and joined the Black Liberation Army. That is where he hijacked a Delta Airlines flight to Miami and demanded $1 million from FBI agents who were only allowed to be dressed in their swimsuits to make the drop.
Wright managed to elude the U.S. government for more than 40 years, but the rest of his accomplices were caught. He was caught in Lisbon, Portugal, where he had been married to a Portuguese woman for 10 years and had two children. His capture is a big win for the FBI. Check out what they had to say about their tenacity here.
