Paparazzi, media, moguls, oh my! It looks like the media is taking a major hit that, for the very first time, may end them up in jail and destroy one of the most powerful news organizations in the U.S. and Britain. So far, the scandal has resulted in the closing of a major British newspaper, the resignations of a major media executive, and the Commissioner for Britain’s famous police force, Scotland Yard!
According to CNN, Rupert Murdoch, who owns News Corp., which includes the long-time media staples of the U.S. –Wall Street Journal, Fox News, the New York Post, and Harper Collins Publishers– also owns the major British papers as well. One of those was News of the World.
News of the World was open for 168 years and was a part of his British subsidiary of News Corp., News International, which holds the Sun, The Times and The Sunday Times in Britain. But, now Murdoch’s empire is beginning to crumble around his feet after a missing girl named Missy Dowler, came up dead after it was discovered that his minions, somehow, got into her cell phone and listened to her voicemail, then deleted some messages so more messages could be taken.
Sounds like Murdoch’s folks have important connections, right? How else would they be able to manipulate her cell phone this way? But, since news of this hit the wire, Murdoch’s news empire has seen both the resignations of his top executive, News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks –who was also questioned, then arrested– and Scotland Yard or Metropolitan Police’s top cop, Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson.
This scandal stinks all the way to the top! When British Prime Minister Dave Cameron took office last year, he hired former News of the World editor Andy Coulson as his communications director. who resigned in 2007 amidst scandal that straaaangely sounds like this one.
A royal editor and private investigator under Coulson’s charge was accused of having access to the royals’ voicemails. It couldn’t possibly be this difficult to add this one up. But, let’s watch how they unfold it. Something tells me that Murdoch won’t be getting his time in court for all of the irresponsible journalim his massive media organization has been getting away with on Fox News and the New York Post.
This just goes to show how powerful media is and has been, especially with one man holding all the strings. He can print what the powers that be wants you to believe. Only problem this time is that the all powerful Murdoch can’t get anyone to write him out of this corner. Read more here.
