CNN is facing a dilemma that most networks face when it comes to adding color to their daily programming. Some have been better about fixing it when it pertains to the soap operas, but now they’re shutting those down too. But, just like the trouble CNN is having, CBS, NBC, and ABC’s news programs lack faces of color behind the news desks of their national evening line-ups and the NAACP is putting the pressure on them to do something about it.
According to Journal-isms, The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) President Kathy Y. Times, was the first to blast CNN for their lack of diversity. She addressed the issue with CNN worldwide President Jim Walton. CNN is sending the message that they do not trust the African American talent they already have in Don Lemon, T.J. Holmes, Soledad O’Brien, to name a few, to the 5pm – 11pm slot heading up their news. A part of the NAACP’s statement represents the core issue:
“The NAACP is especially troubled because these prime time slots are among the most influential in daily news. Prime time hosts in cable often have the most latitude to express their opinions, and evening news anchors are traditionally seen as the most credible voices in weekday news broadcasts.”
NABJ’s annual convention will be held in Philadelphia next month and Times promised Walton that it would be brimming with talent. Walton has vowed to attend the convention and do a search there where not just African Americans are represented, but every color.
So are they saying that no one will trust the truth from an African American? Now that may very well be the truth as they see it. But, it is no different in other businesses…except McDonald’s. I hope some of us have stock in them because we represent well in their advertising. But, think about it. How many businesses put a black face on their products? How many African American films made close to $100 million last year…or ever? We are still disconnecting between our image and ourselves when it comes to the Amercian landscape. Times have truly not changed. Read more here.
