Bronx Teenager Accepted to UConn Later Denied Admittance

Autum Ashante, 13, denied acceptance to UCONN after they sent her an acceptance letter.

When the college acceptance letters come rolling in, parents everywhere poke out their chests and congratulate their kids.  Fathers walk around handing out cigars like the child is being born.  This is reasonable behavior because it is an exciting opportunity to be accepted to an institution of higher learning.  The child’s life begins all over again, but as a young adult.  For the first time they will make use of the lessons the parent has instilled in them…hopefully.  And the sense of accomplishment is overwhelming for both the child and the parents to know that they earned this acknowledgement, especially from a prestigious university.

But, Autum Ashante is still a baby…well she has just become a teenager at the ripe age of 13.  That’s right! That is not a typo, she is really 13 and headed to college.  But, her hopes of being a student at the University of Connecticut have been dashed by a recent phone call she received after being accepted by the school.  It wasn’t as though they gave her a scholarship, they merely admitted her.  According to NY Daily News, they first reported her acceptance on June 16 and the UCONN Spokesman Richard Veilleaux said they were “waiting for the family to formally enroll.”

With Autum’s astounding academic abilities, she was a media showstopper.  Everyone wanted to report on the academic prodigy hailing from the Bronx that was accepted to UCONN.  But, they called the family to say that they now feel that “she’s not academically ready.”  Her father Batin Ashante is furious and not taking it lying down.  He managed to give a statement saying, “I’m fed up!  They have insulted us and the work that we’ve put in.”  He went on to say, “I’m not sure I want her to be involved with an institution that treats her like that.”

But the real deal may be that UCONN got wind of her militant dad and they started backpedaling because Batin Ashante don’t take no mess!  Read here to see what he plans to do.  Fight Batin Ashante! Power to the Ashante’s!

  1. Need to hear more about this. Dan Rather style. O might have to do it. Perhaps OWN will look into producing a show about this…Like The Judds and Saving Sarah. I feel sorry for the rejection. Let’s see how this plays out. Good luck young lady. We are proud of you.
