The anti-abortion campaign targeting black women has officially gone too far. There are several groups that are spearheading the controversial campaigns throughout Atlanta and New York. But, now another campaign that has launched in the South side of Chicago has gone overboard and added President Obama to its billboards with the tag line: “Every 21 minutes, our next possible leader is aborted.”
According to the Chicago Tribune, the African American community is not taking it lying down! Concerned citizens attended a rally where the pro-life organization Life Always, led by African American board member Rev. Derek A. McCoy, unveiled the billboard in the black neighborhood of Englewood at 58th and State Streets.
The people fought back and protested against the pro-life rhetoric of McCoy and his colleagues. It’s one thing to have your own opinion on abortion, it’s a total other to bring innocent children (as in the New York billboard) and our President into it. The message driven by these organizations through these ad campaigns have been nothing less than demeaning, disrespectful, not to mention exploitative. Wouldn’t it make sense to take a different approach that does not jeudge black women, but offer serious, relative solutions?
