I”ve been known to make a grammatical faux pas here and there from time to time, but please be aware that this headline is no mistake. I was trying to find something entertaining, but intellectual, informative, yet stimulating and I ran across this story. The first thing to run across my mind was disbelief. The second was the goosebumps that ran down my arm and back when I thought of all the potential HIV cases this could be.
Frayser High School in Memphis, Tn., is staring down the barrel of a situation that has ramifications much more far reaching than I believe these girls ever imagined. The lives of these girls as well as the educational system in Memphis is in a state of emergency. The detriment of a pregnancy trend in the high school as well as the state is enough to stagger funding into an education system where the attendance rate stands to decline. The social service department of the state may even find themselves drained of resources.
The situation is so dire that it even garnered the attention of Kim Kardashian. She took the time to direct comments toward young women on Twitter. She blames MTV for airing the show “Teen Mom” that has been quite popular amongst its young viewers. She commented saying, While I was at ‘The Today Show’ this morning I saw a story about a Memphis high school where 90 young female students were either pregnant or have given birth this year…. It seems that shows like ‘Teen Mom’ are all of a sudden making teen pregnancy seem cool in the eyes of young girls,” she wrote. “The kids from these shows are all over the news, even on the covers of magazines, and have become almost like celebrities, but girls, these are not people you should idolize,” she wrote.
