The instrumental position that is being filled in Los Angeles is the role of Director of the Public Defender’s Office. The post had never been seated by an African American. This is an amazing and harsh reality when you think of how many young black men encounter this office everyday. We can’t judge a book by its cover, especially in seats of power, but we are hopeful that the office will be improved along with the service given by the public defenders in Los Angeles.
According to the L.A. Times, Ronald Brown was Assistant Public Defender and now has stepped into the lead. His annual salary will be $270,000 and he will be in charge of a $68 million dollar budget. Sounds like a moment of prayer is needed, right? This is a lofty position with a lot of sharks hanging around in these waters. Brown is a ”veteran county lawyer,” so he will know how to swim.
