We Remember Shannon Tavarez

Shannon Tavarez, Nala, of The Lion King

In case you don’t know who she is, Shannon Tavarez, played the role of  Nala in the Broadway spectacular The Lion King.  We were first introduced to her through Rihanna and Alicia Keys when they told us about this special young lady and her illness.  She was battling acute myeloid leukemia and donors were few and far between with her mixed heritage being African American and Hispanic.

Minorities shy away from the bone marrow donor and blood donation lists. But with Tavarez’s highly publicized battle, many more turned out to help with bone marrow donations. Tavarez played the role of Nala for only six months when she was diagnosed in early 2009. Shannon Tavarez died at the young age of 11 years old. Make an effort to look into bone marrow transplants today!
