The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa events kicked off with a huge party to celebrate the beginning of the football (soccer) extravaganza. Shakira, The Black Eyed Peas, and several other groups performed in a kick-off concert, but all of the celebrating ended with a startling loss to the Mandela family. Zenani Mandela, the great granddaughter of Winnie and Nelson Mandela, just turned 13 on June 9, when just two days later a car crash claimed her life.
All of the details are not known as of yet, but her 91-year old great grandfather is surely mourning her as his offices had to generate a response to the media regarding her death. MSNBC does know that at the time of the crash, she was returning home from the concert for the World Cup in Soweto with her great grandmother, Winnie Mandela.
The family asks for privacy as they mourn the loss of their young family member. Read more of the story here.
