Elderly Rape Survivors in Kenya Protect Themselves

The Kenyan police is an unholy band of individuals who in most cases do not do anything about the problem of sexual misconduct in the country.  In Nairobi, specifically, the rape cases of elderly women and/or grandmothers is rising.  According to a report from MSNBC, the rapists believe that having sex with an elderly woman will bring them good fortune or rid them of HIV/AIDS.  At one time, the media was reporting the rape of children and babies in various countries in Africa for the same reason.

But now that the women see that there will be little to no help for them from the police, they are helping themselves with self defense classes that use kung fu to defend themselves.  According to MSNBC, the classes are being offered by an elderly woman who shows them exactly what to do.  With her being an elder, they benefit from seeing what they are capable of in an attack.

The rates of rape are staggering in the city of Nairobi.  A single Nairobi hospital “treated 437 rape victims older than 60 last year,” according to the report.  Julia Karenge, who is in her 80s, told reporters she had been raped twice but she is not in the classes.  She did not defend herself for fear of being killed.  The perpetrators had raped her friend and dumped her body in her yard.
