It looks like former Obama adviser Van Jones was right about the Republicans when he called them “assholes.”
The evidence was on display for the WORLD to see last night when South Carolina Republican and Congressman, Joe Wilson, shouted “you lie” during President Obama’s speech on health care reform to Congress. The outburst was a reaction to the President when he said his plan would not pay for healthcare for illegal immigrants.
Wilson’s outburst drew a rebuke from Obama’s presidential opponent, Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.). McCain called his remark “totally disrespectful, no place for it and he should apologize.” Various House Democrats demanded the same. One Democrat said that Wilson’s actions may have violated House rules. Good call Senator McCain. We’ll strike you from the a-hole list. At least for now.
For the record, Congressman Wilson has apologized, but the question has to be asked: Why did he blatantly disrespect the President of the United States? He says he let his emotions get the best of him. Uh, yeah, you sure did.
For what it’s worth, here’s the four-term South Carolina Republican’s full apology:
“This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility.”
Apology aside, as an elected official, it makes you wonder what would drive Wilson to make such an inappropriate, stupid, classless and, again, disrespectful comment to the President of the United States in front of the world. Maybe it’s because that’s what “assholes” do.
We also did some digging and found out that non-partisan organization FactCheck.org has debunked Wilson and the Republican’s claim that health care reform would mandate coverage for illegal immigrants.
But don’t be surprised when Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Steele and all the other like-minded Republicans come to the defense of this jerk and try to make him a hero. But what else would you expect from … “assholes?”
If you didn’t see it or hear (about) it, here it is:
