Will President Obama Bring Guatanamo Bay to Michigan?

The talk of the town seems to be that President Obama is entertaining the idea of sending prisoners from Guantanmo Bay into a Michigan prison.  Maybe he thinks that  in upper Michigan they will be so cold and isolated the alleged terrorists would not have terrorism on their minds.

This really doesn’t seem to be a good time to spring this one on America as tempers are still flaring at town hall meetings across the nation over the health care reform.   The prison they would be moved to is a maximum security prison that will soon be closed.  The other possible location is Leavenworth which is in Kansas.

According to the Michigan Messenger, in the past this idea was “endorsed”  by Rep. Bart Stupak, who represents the congressional district where the prison is located, Sen. Carl Levin and former Gov. John Engler.  The plan is only opposed by Rep. Pete Hoekstra, Republican candidate for governor in 2010.

  1. It saddens me to think that the American people are so gutless they don’t dare keep our prisoners on American soil. Fact 1: The people at Gitmo are not there because they have been convicted of any crime. They’re there because the Bush administration said, “Lock this person up,” and did so without granting them either the status of prisoners of war OR due process of law. Fact 2: Most of them look different from Americans, can’t speak English, and have no friends in the USA. Even one were to escape, he would be much easier to catch than an escaped American prisoner would be.

I would be much more worried about a prison full of American gang members and multiple murderers than I would about a prison with only 260 *accused* (but not convicted) “terrorists.”
