NBC Universal, which gets its name from a combination of Universal Studios and NBC, has launched TheGrio.com with a special interest in African Americans. The site is supposed to fulfill the African American community’s appetite for news while also providing a provocative discussion on African American issues.
Contributors to the site include Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson’s daughter, Santita Jackson of Chicago’s talk radio WVON. They boast that “The site dives deeper into stories of black interest that mainstream news outlets currently only touch on.” We shall see.
Ford has gotten on board to be a premier advertiser because they want to be wherever the black people are. They figure they are getting in on the ground floor of the site because other advertisers will see the importance of “media aimed at African-Americans.”
