Bono of the famous rock band U2 has revealed his love for Elvis Presley in a poem.  While he admires and loves the controversially deceased rock and roller, Bono defines the rocker from various angles that may be controversial to some.

Bono revealed the poem, “American David” on BBC’s Channel 4 yesterday morning.  While this is the first time he has performed the poem, he wrote it 15 years ago in 1994 and made a recording of it only two years ago.

Some of Elvis’ attributes that are revisited in this poem may leave more than a few of his fans’ eyebrows raised.  The fat, the drugs, the racist, the “spastic” dancer, are all explored in the poem.  One line of the 14-minute salute says:  “Elvis the bumper stickers/ Elvis the white knickers/ Elvis the white nigger ate at Burger King and just kept getting bigger.”  Check out more about the poem and hear him in his own words here.
