The Miss Black Sacramento pageant is for African American young women who are judged mainly by their talent more than anything else in the pageant.
The pageant is a reputable event that helps the young women of Sacramento with skills of social grace like making a formal table and according to the Sacramento Bee, “The pageant, which long ago dumped the swimsuit competition and offers more points for talent than beauty, rewards the winner with scholarship money and teaches girls to be ladies, organizers said.”
But there are some that feel that an all black competition is outdated and unnecessary. The infamous Ward Connerly who has long fought against affirmative action and racially based set asides in this country of course believes that the pageant is no longer needed. He feels that they should just get rid of it and get on with it. “Races and ethnic groups should strive to be part of the American melting pot, not celebrate a sideline existence, he said.”
What do you think? Should we get rid of our Historically Black Colleges and/or Universities too? Why not, I see more white folks on campus everyday. And now that the U.S. is run by the first black president and First Lady and we watch them disrespected, challenged and scrutinized at every turn, surely the common black folks of the land can breathe a sigh of relief and relax on race relations right? That’s right! Don’t bet on it. Read here to see what you think about the pageant.
