The pint-sized star from Slumdog Millionaire, Rubina Ali, hit box office gold with being a part of this year’s sleeper that came to the forefront to surprise everyone by grabbing the Oscar. But, with her fame and fortune came sinister ambitions back home in her impoverished India hometown of Mumbai.
The child has literally become a lottery ticket in her father’s pocket as she is being auctioned off to the highest bidder. The father and his brother even upped their asking amount during negotiations with undercover reporters from Britain’s News of the World. She’s a beautiful child, but her father would rather not suffer poverty than look at her sweet face for the rest of his life.
The U.S. has it’s poverty, but not to the level of poverty in foreign countries throughout the world. If you watched Oprah yesterday for her Earth day episode, you learned that we throw away 42,000 tons of food per year. We have no clue what poverty is, but even so, would you sell your child to find a way out?
He probably figures that this is a win win. She is going to be okay because she’s a star of the biggest movie of the year and she’ll get more work or be “purchased” by someone who will value her. Maybe some international aid/social service program in the U.S. will swoop in and save her and she’ll do well, but he will still be wherever he is and in poverty. Anything but Angelina Jolie and/or Madonna swooping her up. Well maybe that won’t be so bad either considering the circumstances.
