Well, we’re supposedly in a new age now with Barack Obama getting ready to take the reigns, but it is evident that he hasn’t taken the reins just yet. Eliot Spitzer, as we all know, was ousted as New York’s governor after he was caught picking up hookers. Well, it was a little more “sexy” than that, but not much. He was caught up in a nasty federal investigation of a sex ring. He was banished as governor, but will more than likely never hold public office again. Well, never mind all that. Everybody got busted, but somehow they thought it would be best if there were no criminal charges brought against Spitzer. Interesting? Well, it’s not common practice to prosecute the john. This is yet another problem in our legal system that is on Obama’s plate. Lock up the john, prostitution must surely die from lack of demand. Read here while you write your letter to Congress.

The whole world is stunned and relieved at Barack Obama’s victory. The people of the U.S. see it as not just his win, but, for the first time, a win that we share with the President. We supported him and it finally feels like we weren’t hoodwinked or cheated. We went to the polls in unprecedented numbers and got the result we expected. Both of Bush’s elections seemed to cheat the American people out of their vote, but now democracy has spoken. The Boston Globe put together an exquisite photographic essay of the journey Obama experienced on the campaign trail. Keep celebrating with the Globe’s “Big Picture”.

Scientists have been working overtime to find a way to treat one of the most debilitating diseases known to man, Cancer. There are many of us that have lost family members to the disease that has yet to be figured out…till now. The thanks go to the team at Washington University in St. Louis who researched the DNA of a 50 something-year old woman who had died of Leukemia. The scientists studied the entire DNA rather than just a couple hundred cells as had been done in the past. The study gave a major breakthrough into the treatment of the disease and they hope it will result in a medicinal cocktail suited to each individual. Read here about the crusade against Cancer. Barack Obama is a supporter of stem cell research and with these results, we can only imagine what is necessary and possible for the future of health care.

It feels like the moment Barack Obama was pronounced President of the United States, the Earth stopped its rotation for a moment to acknowledge the victory. People were running through the streets all over the world, especially Kenya. The Kenyan people, just as the majority of other black people throughout the world, felt a special bond with Obama’s success. The significance is so tremendous that Kenyan President, Mwai Kibaki made a trailblazing decision to make November 6, a national holiday. Hopefully, the U.S. will follow suit. Bush needs to take advantage of this as one of his last redeeming acts before exiting the White House. But judging from his congratulations speech to Obama, which was dry to say the least, it’s not likely. Read here and celebrate with Kenya.

When you think of NAACP what do you think of? Civil Rights Movement, Rosa Parks, Medgar Evers, historical civil rights activism? Well, the NAACP has brought in a younger set of eyes for CEO and President, Mr. Benjamin Jealous. In fact, he’s the youngest President they’ve ever had at 35 years old. Hopefully, he can bring the organization out of the past and into the future with an image makeover, and needed initiatives. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to hear him campaign, but with the similarities between him and Barack, maybe he too will find mass acceptance. The two have a lot of similarities. Both come from a mixed heritage (black mother/white father). He was a grassroots fundraiser and community organizer. He was also a Rhodes scholar and educated at Columbia. Maybe they will get together and build a taskforce that will thwart racial crimes and injustices that are sure to rise “when” Obama is elected. Read here about the phenomenal young man.
