Prvt. Ronald A. Gray being led away in 1988.

The infamous maximum security prison, Ft. Leavenworth,  is preparing to be less one prisoner as they release their first military inmate for execution since 1961.  The prison is home to some of the most dangerous criminals in the nation.  Pvt. Ronald A. Gray has been on death row at the prison for 20 years.  But before he was given a death sentence by the military in 1988, he was sentenced to multiple life sentences by the civil courts.  (more…)

Katt Williams

We’ve been hearing some disturbing things about Katt Williams lately.  The comedian has had a few no shows and a bout of unusual behavior.  The first time things seemed to be “derailing” was when he had an outburst at the BET Hip-Hop Awards demanding an apology from the staff for, well, we don’t know.  It was unclear to them as well.  The end result was the awards being restructured for the rapper/producer T-Pain to host the show.  It is reported that the straw that broke the camel’s back with his family was when he tried to check into a motel in Sumter, South Carolina in a bath robe with no i.d.  You will also see him crouch down in the doorway for, well, we don’t know.  (more…)

Howard University Nursing Students Stomp The Yard

Howard University has had a strong reputation as being the “mecca” of the academic collective known as historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).  But somehow there was a major breakdown in the classroom that lead the nursing students out the door and to the streets.  The nursing students participated in a formal protest and one student exposed the dean, Beatrice Adderley-Kelly of the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (CPNAHS),  saying she simply walked by “without a second glance.”

The nursing students are charging the school with offering an ”inadequate education”.  A sit-down with faculty to address the student’s issues happened, but the problems were not ironed out.  This is not the first time Howard’s medical program has come under fire.  The medical school lost accreditation at one time, but Black Issues In Higher Education wrote a riveting story on why that ruling may have been unscrupulous and undermining (if you’re interested read here).

But the nursing students are forging dead ahead to gain control over their education and establish certain “priorities” within their program.  Hold your fist in the air for those progressive younguns while reading the full report on their struggle.

Happy Holidays from the OBAMAS!

20. November 2008

The holidays are upon us and things are tight all around, but it’s messages like this that help us keep things in perspective.  The Obamas are addressing the nation in such a personable way that you will feel like having them over for dinner.  This message, from their family to yours, will get you into the holiday spirit.

Just yesterday, they were being threatened by Al-Qaida and another guy was allegedly on his way from Baltimore to shoot the guy.  The security for the newest first family must be making the President-elect feel quite at ease.  Even his children seem to be taking it all in stride.  With everything going on in the world right now, as it pertains to their dad, you would think their little girls would be traumatized.

So before you sit down to your turkey next week and enjoy your gifts at Christmas remember what Barack said “We all have a stake in each other and something larger than ourselves.”  Let’s go out there and share what we can: food, clothes, money, water, time.  Whatever we have to spare at this time (and we know it isn’t a lot) is a whole world to someone else.  Let’s try and hold up our end of the Presidency.  Remember?  Yes WE Can!

Not A Good Day for Barack

Okay, where do we start.  Well, the hands down winner for originality in a foreign threat has to go to Ayman al-Zawahri, also known as, second in command in the infamous Al-Qaida.  He calls Obama, Condoleeza Rice and Colin Powell “house negroes” and then on top of that pulls Malcolm X into the mess.  He, in this videotaped montage, played a clip of one of Malcolm X’s speeches that defined the term so he could, in proper context, accuse Obama and friends of not standing up to white oppression.  He goes on to address “all the world’s weak and oppressed,” and put them on notice saying, ”America has put on a new face, but its heart full of hate, mind drowning in greed and spirit which spreads evil, murder, repression and despotism continue to be the same as always.”

Then, this morning, here comes a black guy on the MARC train (which runs between Baltimore and D.C.) boarding with an assault weapon on his way to shoot Obama.  But the trip didn’t start out that way.  He was in a cab and the cabbie said he was acting suspicious and that the man told him he needed a ride to D.C. where he’s from.  But, he also mentioned the White House and the cab driver saw his AK-47 hanging out of a bag.  He’s no fool!  He got on the horn and called the police and they had the train’s engineer hold the train.  Needless to say, he’s in custody.  Someone give Obama a hug please.  If you wanna see all the details, read here for Muslim extremist and read here for alleged Obama assassin.

Is Retirement A Thing of the Past?

seniors at work

Lots of senior citizens are having to return to the workforce for various reasons.  Some have lost their health benefits that their employer promised they could keep for life and some have lost their retirement funds in the latest stock market turmoil.  The retirement age is on the rise and it doesn’t seem to be taking a downturn anytime soon.  People used to have their choice of locations to move to and grow old gracefully, but now they are trying to save their homes from predatory lenders, pay the astronomical gas and electric bills, and/or working simply to afford the food.

Atop of all of the retirement issues on the table is the unemployment disaster.  A lot of seniors that need to return to the workforce don’t have the option.  That paints another horrific picture on the face of poverty in the U.S.  Seniors are cutting back the retirement lifestyles that were once supposed to be a comfortable time to celebrate the hard work they had done for decades.  Read here to see how long you have to live to afford living.
