A lot of us have taken a ”greener”approach to our everyday lives in an effort to save our planet.  But, then there’s those of us who have taken to the “green thing” as a fad.  Whatever your reason, it will have a great outcome on the planet.  So, for those of you who have switched from cow’s milk to soy milk because it’s “in” to have “Silk” in your refrigerator, here’s a nice little breakdown on the “eco-friendliness” of them both.  At least you can make an informed decision the next time you go to the store.  You may find out you can maintain your “cool” and save the planet all at the same time.  Read all about it here.

dna.jpgGenes are incredible and mysterious.  They are behind the twitch that you share with a great great grandfather down to the color of your eyes from your great, great grandmother.  Some people act just like a parent with whom they have little to no contact.  Now DNA has been unravelled enough that the mystery behind the African and African American communities high contraction rate of HIV/AIDS may prove to be genetics.  The latest research shows that the same gene that keeps Africans from contracting malaria is the same gene that makes Africans as well as African Americans susceptible to the virus.  Makes you feel like they should be able to figure this thing out sooner than later, right?  Read the details here.

There have been movie reviews that leave you with a thumbs up or thumbs down, but not this one.  This one makes you say, “Hmmmm.”  Looking at the commercials for Hancock familiarizes the unsuspecting audience with the “average” traits of Hancock.  He’s an alcoholic, he curses, he’s homeless, he’s a bum and oh yeah, he’s a black man.  ‘Don’t worry boys and girls, when there is trouble afoot leave it to Super…no not Super anything…Hancock.’  Recognize any stereotypes that parallel a male ethnic group?  Remove your rose-colored shades and read this review.  You’ll feel like you’ve swallowed the “red pill.”  Maybe all movie reviews should be written from this perspective.

Cell phones are really getting to be a way of life for a lot of people.  Once upon a time, people would go pick up a one-time use camera for events, now you see them standing around snapping photos with their cell phones.  The cell phone has lost it’s initial reason for its use.  Taking pictures and talking on it have become a thing of the past.  Now, it’s all about the text.  Texting is so popular that police departments nationwide have decided to benefit from it by telling all the good people of the community to text in crimes.  It’s working in several communities like Cincinnati, Boston, Louisville, and Tampa.  Your cell phone coupled with the police can make you a superhero.  The amount of texts that teenagers log per month could stop crime in America tomorrow.  Read the full story here to see how it’s working in cities across the country.

josephinebaker.jpgBlack cinema has a longer history than a lot of us realize.  Foxy Brown, Superfly, nor Shaft were probably even born when these movie greats graced the screen for the first time.  Josephine Baker shook her money maker on out of America into France and into superstardom during a time when blacks were being lynched and migrating to the north for a better life.  The U.S. Postal service has decided that it is high time that this era in black cinema be commemorated.  The stamps will be released today and a ceremony will be held in Newark, NJ.

urban-garden-smaller.jpgDetroit is revisiting its “roots”…literally.  The city has been overrun with crime, unemployment, and a philandering mayor that has cost the city millions.  But now, those who can’t seem to find a way to keep their head above water can, at least, feed their families from new gardens sprouting up everywhere.  Urban Farming is a charity headquartered in Detroit that has already planted 500 gardens and is looking to take the idea to London.  The idea of alleviating hunger in urban centers should make anyone want to come out and grab a shovel.  Read the full story here.
